SaaS Explainer Videos: Why They Convert (and How to Get Them Right)
Noa Tuloup
A SaaS explainer video is a short animation, 60 to 90 seconds long, that shows in plain language what problem your software solves and how. It converts because it packs into one minute what a visitor would otherwise need several minutes to read and piece together in their head. According to Wyzowl’s annual survey, nearly all marketers say video has improved users’ understanding of their product, and a large majority of consumers say they watch an explainer video before taking an interest in a product or service. On a SaaS landing page, where conversion rates are usually measured in single-digit percentages, gaining a few seconds of clarity in the right place is enough to move the needle. This article explains why this format works so well for software in particular and, above all, how to get it right.
Why explainer videos convert especially well for SaaS
A SaaS product has a sales problem that few other products face: it is invisible and abstract. You can’t touch it, test it at a glance or sum it up in a photo. A visitor landing on your page has to answer three questions within seconds: “What does it do?”, “Does it solve my problem?” and “How does it actually work?” Text does a poor job of answering them, because it forces people to read, decode jargon and imagine the interface. Video, on the other hand, shows the product in action and tells the benefit story at the same time.
Specialist agencies analyzing B2B SaaS pages regularly report that pages with a product video convert better than pages without one, with some cases nearly doubling conversions. These figures should be read with caution: they describe favorable situations, and Unbounce’s analysis of tens of thousands of landing pages shows that the effect of a video varies widely depending on the industry and how it is integrated. The logic, however, is sound and holds up in practice: a well-placed video reduces cognitive effort, reassures visitors that the product is serious and keeps them on the page longer.
The three psychological levers at play
Instant understanding. The brain processes an animated demonstration far faster than a paragraph. In 60 seconds, you get across a message that a user would never have pieced together by skimming your page.
Proof through demonstration. Showing the interface, a workflow or a “before/after” proves that the product exists and delivers on its promise, without asking visitors to take your word for it.
Trust. A polished video signals a serious product. Conversely, a blurry screenshot or a sloppy demo casts doubt on the quality of the software itself.
These mechanisms aren’t unique to SaaS: we explore them more broadly in our article on why motion design converts better than text. What makes them decisive for software is how abstract the product is: when there is nothing physical to show, visual clarity becomes the selling point.
Explainer video, product demo, onboarding: don’t mix up the formats
The word “video” covers several formats that serve different moments of the customer journey. Mixing them up is the number one reason a video fails to convert: a four-minute demo ends up where a 60-second hook was needed.
Type | Goal | Ideal length | Where to place it |
|---|---|---|---|
Explainer video | Make the problem you solve clear and spark interest | 60 to 90 s | Top of the landing page, ads, hero |
Product demo | Show the features in detail | 2 to 5 min | Product page, sales sequence, email |
Onboarding video | Activate a user who has already signed up | 30 s to 2 min | In the app, activation emails |
Case study / testimonial | Reassure with social proof | 1 to 2 min | “Customers” page, bottom of the funnel |
The explainer video is the one for first contact. It shouldn’t say everything: it should give just enough to earn the click. If your goal is to activate users who have already signed up, that’s a different project, covered in our article on SaaS onboarding videos. And to choose precisely between 30, 60 or 90 seconds based on your message, see our guide to the ideal length for a presentation video.
How to make a SaaS explainer video that works: the method
A video that converts isn’t made in the edit. It’s made upstream, in the script and the storyboard. Here are the steps that make the difference.
1. Open with the problem, not the product
The most common mistake is to start with “We are an all-in-one platform that…”. Nobody relates to that. High-performing videos open on the viewer’s pain point (the tedious task, the wasted time, the overflowing spreadsheet) before introducing the solution. Viewers should think “that’s exactly my problem” within the first five seconds. The product only comes in afterwards, as the answer. This narrative logic is built at the writing stage: we cover it in detail in our guide to writing a motion design video script.
2. One message, one CTA
An explainer video is not a feature catalog. Pick the main benefit and build everything around it. Agency tests point the same way: videos that set up a problem, explain the solution simply, stay under 90 seconds and end with a single call to action hold attention better than those that pile on arguments. Every extra feature you mention dilutes the message.
3. Actually show the product
Motion design lets you stylize an interface and make it readable and well paced, where a raw screenshot would be confusing. That’s a major asset for SaaS: you can stage the real user journey without being let down by a UI that is in the middle of a redesign. It’s also why animation is often preferred over live action for software, a trade-off we break down in our comparison of motion design vs. traditional video.
4. Get the voiceover and sound right
The voice carries a large share of the emotion and clarity. The right tone, a controlled pace and crisp delivery are worth more than beautiful visuals over flat copy. Sound design and music, often overlooked, guide attention and give a sense of professional polish. B2B software and a consumer app don’t call for the same audio feel.
5. Adapt it for every channel
Your video will live on your website in 16:9, but also as a square 1:1 ad and in vertical 9:16 on social media. Planning for these formats from the start saves you from redoing everything. The topic deserves a guide of its own: see our article on which video format to use and when.
The mistakes that sink a SaaS explainer video
Too long. Beyond 90 seconds on a landing page, attention drops off. Save the details for the demo.
Too much jargon. If a layperson can’t understand your video, it won’t convert. Test it on someone outside the project.
No clear problem. A video that lists features without naming a pain point leaves viewers indifferent.
No CTA, or too many. End on a single, clear action: “Try it free”, “Book a demo”.
Sloppy production. For a tech product, a cut-rate video damages credibility. The perceived quality of the video reflects on the perceived quality of the software.
How much does a SaaS explainer video cost, and how long does it take?
At Motionlab, an explainer video generally ranges from €1,500 to €8,000 excl. VAT depending on length and style, with a 60-second video most often falling in the €3,000 to €4,500 excl. VAT range. 2D starts at €1,500, and 3D starts at €6,000 per minute. To understand what drives these prices, see our detailed breakdown of what a motion design video costs in 2026. As for timing, most of the market needs several weeks for a standard project, while ours is delivered in 10 days (details in our article on how long it takes to produce a video).
FAQ
How long should a SaaS explainer video be?
60 to 90 seconds for a landing page. That’s the window in which you can deliver a clear message without losing attention. Save longer formats for the product demo.
Does an explainer video really increase conversions?
Industry studies (Wyzowl, specialist agencies) show a clear positive effect on product understanding and conversion, with some SaaS pages seeing conversions nearly double. These are favorable cases, not a guarantee: results depend on the quality of the script, the placement and the industry.
Motion design or live-action video for SaaS?
Motion design is generally the better choice for software: it showcases the interface, illustrates abstract concepts and stays easy to update. See our comparison of motion design vs. traditional video.
Where should I place the video on my page?
At the top of the landing page, in the hero, close to your value proposition and your main CTA. That’s where visitors decide within seconds whether to stay or leave.
Do I need a different video for each channel?
Not a different video, but versions of the same content: 16:9 for the website, 1:1 and 9:16 for ads and social media. Plan for this from the brief.
What should a good brief include?
Your target audience, the problem you solve, the main benefit, the tone, your brand guidelines and the conversion goal. Our guide to briefing an agency effectively walks you through the process.
